MIAMI – Fisher Island Club, headed by CEO Bernard Lackner, and one of the world’s most exclusive private island communities, clubs, and resorts, is pleased to announce that its globally renowned Tennis Center has achieved a smashing success. After a thoughtful renovation, the facility is now one of very few tennis centers worldwide to offer all four “Grand Slam” playing surfaces, with the new addition of five “French Open” red clay courts.
“Fisher Island Club sought not only to offer all four playing surfaces, but to also ensure that each tennis court looks and plays exactly as those the touring professionals compete on at each Grand Slam venue,” said Lackner. “This is truly a special accomplishment which will captivate the Club’s tennis aficionados and top players.”
Fisher Island Club’s outstanding Tennis Center has long been a favorite place for pre-tournament practice by visiting professionals including Serena Williams, Grigor Dimitrov, Caroline Wozniacki, Eugenie Bouchard, Agnieszka Radwanska, Andre Agassi, Tomas Berdych, Sloane Stephens, Jim Courier, Boris Becker, the Bryan Brothers, and Bernard Tomic, among many others.
Ranked by Tennis Magazine as one of the finest facilities of its kind in the world, Fisher Island Club’s Mediterranean-inspired Tennis Center offers 18 tennis courts with varying playing surfaces, including:
- “French Open” Red Clay Courts: The Club’s five, new “French Open” red clay courts are built with European red clay, specifically designed and maintained to play at a standard similar to that of the French Open Grand Slam Championships held in Paris, France. These courts can be counted among the very few “European” red clay courts offered throughout the United States. The red clay surface plays 20-percent slower and produces a significantly higher bounce than traditional Har-Tru green clay courts in the UnitedStates. This truly unique type of court is composed of one of the softest clays in the world, offering an extremely forgiving playing surface for all ages.
- “US Open” DecoTurf Cushion Courts: The Club offers two DecoTurf cushion courts, which offer a similar standard to that of the official surface of the US Open Grand Slam Championships held in Flushing Meadows, NY and the Australian Open Grand Slam Championships in Melbourne, Australia. This summer, the ITF (International Tennis Federation), the governing body of tennis, recognized the Club’s DecoTurf court as “two star,” their highest possible court rating. This prestigious designation certifies that the court was built to the highest standards in tennis and raises the Fisher Island Club Tennis Center to the elite level that only 15 other tennis facilities throughout the world have achieved, as per the ITF.
- Championship Grass Courts: Fisher Island Club offers two championship grass courts featuring a similar standard to the courts at Wimbledon Championships in London, England. Recently, Fisher Island Club hired Neil Stubley, Head Groundsman of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, where the Wimbledon Championships are held, to consult the Club’s turf maintenance program. As keeper of the world’s most iconic tennis venue, he is widely considered to be one of the leading experts regarding grass court maintenance. In March 2015, Stubley spent three days at Fisher Island Club to consult, create and implement a new grass court maintenance plan. Together with the Club’s staff, he worked specifically to improve the “playability” of the grass courts – a newly-designed plan that was fully implemented in early May.
- Har-Tru Green Clay Courts: Fisher Island Club also offers 9 hydro (sub-irrigated) Har-Tru green clay courts, the world’s leading clay court surface. Not only is Har-Tru easier on the body, it is also 10 to 15 degrees cooler to play on than the average hard court.
“We are extremely proud to offer one of the most advanced tennis facilities in the world,” says Lackner. “The added value of our ten-foot hedges that surround each court provide ultimate privacy, excellent depth perception, exceptional wind protection, and a unique beauty rarely experienced at other tennis centers. It is no wonder that the Club’s Tennis Center has become a preferred practice and training destination for leading touring professionals from around the globe.”
In addition to the Tennis Center’s 18 courts, the facility also boasts a newly-renovated pro shop, a conference center to accommodate meeting space for groups of up to 20 people, and nearly 7,000 square feet of open patio space.
Fisher Island Club is a 216-acre tropical paradise located off the tip of Miami Beach. Accessible only by a seven-minute ferry ride or private motor yacht, the Club features its own palm-lined private beach with powder-soft sand imported from the Bahamas, a luxurious Hotel that is a member of Leading Hotels of the World, a beach club, a P.B. Dye 9-hole championship golf course, two deep-water marinas, seven dining venues, a full-service spa, salon and fitness center, an observatory for stargazing, and an aviary with dozens of exotic birds.
